Colorado has the highest breastfeeding rates in the country
The Centers for Disease Control has released its 2022 report on breastfeeding rates for children born in 2019.
At birth, 83.2% of babies born in 2019 started breastfeeding (down slightly from 84.1% in 2017). At 6 months, 55.8% were still breastfeeding (down slightly from 58.3% in 2017). The percentage of breastfed infants supplemented with infant formula before 2 days of age was 19.2%, the same percentage as infants born in 2017.
In the U.S., West Virginia had the lowest rate of 59.8% of babies who were ever breastfed and 31.7% of babies breastfed at 6 months. Colorado had the highest rate of 94% of babies ever breastfed, followed by Washington 93.7% and Idaho at 93.5%.
Hawaii is #1 for longevity because 70.9% of moms were still breastfeeding at 6 months.
